*Glossary

• Short Story Syndrome: stories that go on, and on, and on, usually in a dry and/or pompous manner; overly affected.


• Sophie's Choice Syndrome: a book with a suitcase of hype that circles around its plot with so many digressions that one doesn't feel the least bit of compunction about never finishing it. And not seeing the movie.


• Too Many Renewals: can't renew the book anymore but will pick it up again . . . someday.


• New Book Syndrome: can't wait to read, buy it, sits on a pile, no longer new, not so interesting.


• "The Village" Syndrome: no spoilers here, but suffice to say, a book that promises lots of delightful creepy-crawlies and instead delivers something frustratingly prosaic. A variation of "It's Just a Big Spider" Syndrome.
